Hi class,
Don't forget to comment below by 8 am tomorrow.
As an optional assignment, you may submit a summary of the lecture on polymers by next Wednesday. The word limit is 500.
On further reflection, the error of the volumetric flask should be used to determine the concentration of the sodium hydroxide solution. The volumetric flask indicates a standard deviation of
±
0.40 mL. In an actual chemistry laboratory class, you would be required to carry that standard deviation throughout your calculation. I'm not going to make you do that. Instead, let's round that error and say the smallest increment on the volumetric flask is 0.1 mL. Therefore, we added 10.00 mL (graduated cylinder) of 1.0 M sodium hydroxide (from stock bottle) to create a 500.00 mL solutions. (1.0 M)(50.00 mL) = M2(500.00 mL); M2 = 0.10 M NaOH. If you've already done your calculations and used a different value for molarity, it shouldn't take much time to redo your calculations. Just go back to your handwritten equations and take everything out to one more digit.
In an actual chemistry lab class, you are required to write in pen during lab, and you cannot rewrite your data onto a new sheet. For this class, you may rewrite your data onto a clean sheet. Here is a link to the Titration Lab Packet. You do not need to attach your calculations on a separate sheet. The sample calculations in the report are sufficient.
I wish I had time to give a tutorial on Excel since this program is used frequently in chemistry. I recommend using Excel whenever possible. If one of your measurements is incorrect, you can simply replace that number rather than redoing every calculation.
I require at least two citations on this lab report. I forgot to mention that you can also cite further experimentation in your conclusion section. Here is a link to the ACS Citations. Most of the articles on Google Scholar are inaccessible to the general public, so you may use other sources (not Wikipedia). I found several sources that describe how phenolphthalein works, so you shouldn't have any issues finding these same sources.
Email me if you have any questions.

Day 128
Hi class,
Don't forget to comment below by 8 am tomorrow.
Ben and Shaji will give their presentation on sections 3 and 4 of chapter 18. I would recommend reading these sections before class tomorrow.
In class today, Shaji asked why the ozone hole formed over Antarctica. Essentially, atmospheric winds blow the CFCs around the globe, but the atmosphere above Antarctica hosts ideal conditions for the breakdown of CFCs, which leads to the breakdown of ozone. For a more detailed answer, please click on the following link: https://www.nsf.gov/about/history/nsf0050/arctic/ozone.htm
I mentioned in class that if the Montreal Protocol had not been enacted, the ozone layer would have completely deleted by 2065. Here is a cool video that models what will happen vs. what would have happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MeKqJrMrQI. The left planet shows what will happen, whereas the right planet shows what would have happened if the Montreal Protocol had not been enacted. The darker blue color represents areas of complete ozone depletion.

Hi class,
Don't forget to comment below by 8 am on Monday.
The quiz on sections 10.7 through 10.9 will be administered during class on Monday. In preparation for the quiz, review the lecture notes and the homework problems. In particular, you need to understand the kinetic-molecular theory and its application to gas laws, molecular effusion and diffusion, and the deviation of real gases from ideal behavior.
The presentations on chapter 18 are due by 10 pm on Monday. There are many ways you can get your presentation to me. You can use email, dropbox, or Google Drive. You can also hand me your presentation on a USB drive during school on Monday. The sooner you send me your presentation, the sooner I can give you feedback.
The point of this project is to determine whether you can interpret a college-level text and teach the information to your peers. Therefore, you should present your information as a lecture. Below, I have provided the grading rubric and a few notes that we discussed in class on Friday.
Grading Rubric
Time: 5 pts
Delivery: 15 pts
Visuals: 15 pts
Content: 45 pts

HW Qs: 10 pts
Notes
1) Do not read straight from your Powerpoint or Prezi, etc. Use your slides as an outline. You may bring note cards if necessary.
2) You do not need to cite images, but you do need to cite information that is not in the text. You can either create citation slides at the end of your presentation, or you can hand me a works cited page. You may use MLA format for your citations. On the citation slides or page, indicate that all images were reproduced without permission.
Email me if you have any questions about the quiz or presentation. The presentation schedule is outlined below.

The exam on chapters 3, 4, 5 and most of 10 will be administered during class tomorrow. You may fill-out the provided index card as a cheat sheet for the exam. Do not memorize how to work specific problems. Instead, understand how to get from what you are given to your solution. In sum, use dimensional analysis. If you have any questions, you can email me anytime before midnight.
The keys to the quizzes are available through Google Drive. Each of you should have received an email with a link to two zip files that contain the keys. (Ben, I wasn't able to send you the link. What is your email address?)

As you know, the nine weeks exam has been moved to this Tuesday. The exam will still contribute to your Quarter 3 grades. Since the exam is worth 100 points, this test can really help or hurt your grade. You are allowed to bring a cheat sheet, which I will discuss in further detail on Monday. You can also ask me any questions at anytime via email or in class on Monday.
