Day 128
Hi class,

Ben and Shaji will give their presentation on sections 3 and 4 of chapter 18. I would recommend reading these sections before class tomorrow.
In class today, Shaji asked why the ozone hole formed over Antarctica. Essentially, atmospheric winds blow the CFCs around the globe, but the atmosphere above Antarctica hosts ideal conditions for the breakdown of CFCs, which leads to the breakdown of ozone. For a more detailed answer, please click on the following link: https://www.nsf.gov/about/history/nsf0050/arctic/ozone.htm
I mentioned in class that if the Montreal Protocol had not been enacted, the ozone layer would have completely deleted by 2065. Here is a cool video that models what will happen vs. what would have happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MeKqJrMrQI. The left planet shows what will happen, whereas the right planet shows what would have happened if the Montreal Protocol had not been enacted. The darker blue color represents areas of complete ozone depletion.
